Community Based Doulas (CBDs) serve communities and help to address health disparities during pregnancy and birth, especially for families of color. Evidence consistently demonstrates that Black and Indigenous families experience significant disparities in pregnancy-related morbidity and mortality. CBDs provide accessible, high-quality labor support to childbearing families with the goal of mitigating racial and ethnic disparities in pregnancy-related outcomes. As they work to improve perinatal health, doulas are providing equity work while facing inequitable systems with little support.
